While the warm weather and beautiful sunshine seems like the perfect situation for working out, there are some underlying issues that might present challenges. There are countless activities that you can do to stay active during the warm summer months whether it’s walking your dogs around the block a few times per day, or taking a bike ride with the family. But it’s important to note that during warmer temperature your body becomes overheated at a faster rate than in the cooler months. Another integral factor to consider is that is that warm temperature also brings humidity and due to this, your sweat doesn’t evaporate as quickly as it does in the cooler months, so your body has a harder time releasing heat. With all things considered though, don’t let this prevent you from going outside and enjoying the beautiful summer days, just take the necessary precautions and you’ll be fine.
Timing is important- Be very strategic about the times you choose to go outside. The sun is usually at its hottest between 12 noon and 3 pm so it’s important to try and work around these times. Early morning and late evening are great for jogging, hiking or taking a stroll.
Safety First– In order to really enjoy the season you have to take the necessary safety precautions to avoid sun related injuries. Always wear sunscreen (SPF 30 and higher) and make sure to reapply every two hours. For those with fare skin who are prone to sunburn, always wear sunglasses, a hat and protective clothing. In this instance while it’s still fine to take your workout outside try to do it in a shaded area — this way you are still able to enjoy the warm weather without putting yourself in danger.
Hydrate– Always bring a bottle of water to your workout session whether it’s a high performance activity such as boot camp, or something less strenuous such as walking around the block. Drink water before, during, and after your physical activity.
Get creative – The warm weather presents opportunities for you to try so many creative workout routines. You can perform yoga on the beach, play a game of basketball or try something totally out of your comfort zone such as kayaking, surfing or paddle boarding. There are many great opportunities that will give you a full body workout while you enjoy the warm weather and beautiful sunshine.
